Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This pair of nineteenth-century Continental wall mirrors dates from 1870 in the Rococo Revival style. Each piece comprises a carved wood and gesso frame with an off-white distressed paint finish, enclosing a shaped original mirror glass plate. The highly ornate openwork frame displays intricate decoration including acanthus leaf carving, C-scrolls, and shell motifs, complemented by a prominent lower finial and shaped upper cresting. Measuring 115 cm high, 66 cm wide, and 3 cm deep, the mirrors are of good scale for domestic interiors. They suit placement above a sideboard in a dining room, hallway, or living area to introduce classic French chateau character to a wall.

FAQs

Continental Rococo mirrors from the 19th century are defined by elaborate scrollwork, asymmetric C-scrolls, shell motifs, floral accents, and stylized foliage carved into timber or formed from composition gesso.

These mirrors were constructed using softwoods or hardwoods coated in layers of gesso, which was then hand-carved, painted, or gilded, holding hand-blown silvered mirror glass panels.

Authentic period mirrors exhibit hand-carved joints, natural timber oxidisation on the unpainted reverse, slight irregularities in the mirror glass, and subtle wear to the gesso surface layer.

A pair of decorative wall mirrors can be positioned symmetrically above a console table, flanking a chimneypiece, or placed above bedside tables to add vertical architectural accent and bounce natural light.

Gesso frames require gentle dusting with a soft, dry feather duster or soft-bristled brush; moisture, solvent spray cleaners, and abrasive cloths must be avoided to protect the paint layer.
