Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An overmantel mirror is a wide decorative wall mirror designed specifically to sit directly above a fireplace mantelpiece. Popularised in 18th and 19th-century British homes, these mirrors served to reflect candlelight and hearth light, enhancing the light and architectural proportions of formal reception rooms.

Nineteenth-century overmantel frames were typically constructed from carved timber or pine overlayed with gesso moulding. The surface was finished using gold leaf applied through traditional water gilding or oil gilding techniques, surrounding a silvered glass mirror plate.

Authentic period giltwood mirrors show characteristic signs of age, including fine hairline cracking in the gesso surface known as craquelure, natural oxidisation or dark spotting on the mirror glass, hand-joined timber backings, and subtle wear to the gold leaf revealing the underlying red or grey bole clay.

Position the mirror centrally above a living room fireplace, a wide hallway console table, or a dining room sideboard. The warmth of the gilded finish creates a focal point that bridges period architecture with contemporary furnishings.

Maintain a giltwood frame by dusting gently with a soft dry brush or feather duster. Never apply water, liquid glass cleaner, or abrasive chemical polishes directly to the gilt surface, as moisture will dissolve the historic gesso and strip away delicate gold leaf.
