A pier mirror is a tall, narrow mirror originally designed to be placed on the wall space, or pier, between two windows in formal reception rooms and hallways.

Nineteenth-century mirrors were typically constructed with a carved wooden core covered in gesso molding, which was then decorated with thin gold leaf and fitted with hand-blown silvered mirror glass.

Authentic pieces often exhibit subtle cracking or crazing in the gesso, unevenness in hand-blown glass, signs of red or grey clay bolus underneath worn gilding, and traditional wooden backboards.
