Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1900s:
Gothic trefoil piercings in the splats: ecclesiastical styling around the turn of the century.
Hymn-book troughs fixed to the back uprights: made as original church seating.
Visible flecks of ray figure across the top rails: traditional quarter-sawn oak.
Dished solid seats smoothed by handling: wear across a century of use.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

This substantial set of twelve Gothic Revival dining chairs originates from around 1900 and derives from a chapel or church setting. Rendered in a warm brown oak with a polished finish, the seating group features solid wooden saddle seats, openwork back splats pierced with trefoil cutouts, square back frames, turned legs, supporting side stretchers, and three cross stretchers. Each chair measures 85 cm high, 42 cm wide, and 45 cm deep, with a seating height of 45 cm. These heavy, practical chairs suit placement around a large dining table in a kitchen or dining room for everyday family seating and entertaining.

FAQs

Gothic Revival furniture emerged in the nineteenth century, drawing structural and ornamental inspiration from medieval ecclesiastical design. Common features include heavy oak timber, pointed arches, pierced trefoil cutouts, and sturdy frame-and-panel joinery.

Chairs of this era were typically constructed from solid hardwoods such as native oak, utilizing traditional mortise and tenon joints for durability. The timber seats were often contoured for comfort without the need for textile upholstery.

Authentic period chairs display genuine surface patination, hand-cut detailing in the splats, and evidence of historic joinery methods. Standard wear across stretchers and seat edges indicates age, contrasting with modern uniform machine finishes.

These timber chairs pair exceptionally well with a simple rustic farmhouse dining table or a contemporary minimalist setting to create visual texture. Combining historic architectural elements with clean modern lines adds depth to dining rooms.

Maintain solid oak by dusting regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and applying a clear beeswax polish once or twice a year to preserve the wood grain. Keep timber away from direct heat sources and excess moisture to prevent splitting or warping.
