This set of six Edward Barnsley design dining chairs dates from the 1930 period in the Arts and Crafts style. The suite is constructed from solid warm brown oak with a visible grain, complemented by neutral beige upholstered drop-in seats. Each chair presents a high geometric lattice backrest, plain square legs, morticed H-stretcher bases, and exposed dovetail joints on the top rail. The dimensions are 93 cm in height, 45 cm in width, and 45 cm in depth, with a seat height of 48 cm. These dining chairs suit placement around a timber dining table in an English country house interior or traditional dining room setting. The sturdy construction provides comfortable seating for everyday family meals or formal dinner parties while maintaining a clean, architectural silhouette derived from the Cotswold School tradition.

Furniture from this era emphasizes handcrafted joinery, clean geometric lines, and the structural appreciation of native timber such as English oak. Influenced by designers like Edward Barnsley and Gordon Russell, the style bridges late Victorian craftsmanship and mid-century modernism.

Chairs of this period are predominantly crafted from solid oak using traditional mortise and tenon joints. Features like lattice backrests, square-cut legs, and H-frame stretchers provide strength and structural durability.

Look for visible traditional woodwork techniques, subtle hand-planed surfaces, authentic aged patination on the timber, and sturdy stretchers joining the legs beneath the seat frame.

These chairs pair well with simple contemporary wooden tables or minimalist dining spaces, providing textural warmth and historical character through their structured geometry.

Maintain the timber by dusting regularly with a soft cloth and applying a clear beeswax polish once or twice a year to preserve the oak finish and protect against drying.
