This tall nineteenth-century French rectangular mirror brings a classic chateau style to a home interior. Constructed from wood and gesso with a gold leaf finish, the frame presents an aged gold colour and a simple moulded border with an aged patina. The glass remains in good condition, reflecting light and space when positioned in an empty corner of a living room, hallway or bedroom. The piece is 157 cm high, 94 cm wide and 5 cm deep. Placed against a wall, it functions as a striking decorative focal point while enhancing the natural brightness of the room through its generous reflective surface.

French gilt mirrors from the nineteenth century are characterised by moulded wooden frames finished with applied gold leaf over a gesso base, designed with clean linear profiles or elaborate crestings to reflect natural light within formal rooms.

The frames were typically crafted from solid timber, layered with a plaster-like gesso compound, coated in clay bole, and finished with thin sheets of gold leaf applied using traditional water or oil gilding techniques.

Authentic pieces often exhibit subtle wear where the underlying reddish clay bole shows through the gold leaf, along with period-appropriate wood backboards, hand-moulded frame joinery, and natural oxidisation on the mirror glass.

Positioning a large rectangular mirror leaning against a neutral wall creates an elegant focal point, while hanging it opposite windows maximizes reflected ambient light and visually expands the room.

Dust the gilded frame gently with a dry, soft-bristled brush or feather duster, avoiding moisture and liquid polish which can dissolve traditional water gilding, and clean the glass using a lightly dampened cloth.
