Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

A 19th-century gilt overmantel mirror is a wide architectural wall mirror designed specifically to sit directly above a fireplace mantelpiece. Typically featuring a low, flat base and ornate top mouldings, these mirrors often incorporate classical elements such as spherules, fluted columns, and decorative gesso carving.

Frames from this period were predominantly constructed from carved pine or lime wood coated with layers of gessoa mixture of chalk and sizeto create smooth base details. Gold leaf was then applied using water gilding or oil gilding techniques before housing mercury or silvered glass plates.

Authentic pieces display subtle age indicators, including hair-line cracks in the gesso surface where wood joints underneath have moved, gentle wear exposing the reddish bole layer under the gold leaf, and slight foxing or oxidisation spots on the mirror plate.

Positioning a substantial gilt mirror above a fireplace or a contemporary console table creates an immediate focal point, enhancing natural light and visual room depth. Pairing historic gilded frames with minimalist modern furnishings provides a balanced contrast of textures and eras.

Gilt frames should be dusted gently using a soft, dry camel-hair brush or feather duster, avoiding water or chemical sprays which dissolve gesso and remove gold leaf. Glass cleaners must be applied directly to a cloth rather than sprayed near the gilded timber frame.
