This overmantel mirror dates from the 19th century in the Grand Regency style. The frame comprises carved wood and gesso finished in a gold gilt with architectural cornicing, fluted columns at the sides, acanthus leaf capitals, and ribbed moulding, enclosing the original mirror glass and backboards. Specifically, the frame displays prominent top corner leaf carvings, detailed floral motifs at the base of each column, and visible surface wear to the gold finish. Measuring 66 cm high, 106 cm wide, and 7 cm deep, this piece is intended for placement above the mantel in a living room, dining room, or bedroom. It provides a focal point above a fireplace or sideboard in a traditional interior setting.

Overmantel mirrors from the 19th century feature wide horizontal proportions designed to sit above a fireplace hearth, often decorated with architectural motifs such as fluted columns, leaf capitals, and molded gesso detailing finished with gold leaf.

Craftsmen constructed frame bases using durable woods like pine or lime, coated them with gessoa mixture of chalk and animal glueto carve ornate shapes, and applied thin layers of gold leaf over clay bole.

Authentic period pieces often display fine surface craquelure throughout the gesso layer, hints of red clay bole showing through worn gold leaf, hand-loomed or wood-plank backboards, and natural oxidisation on the mirror glass.

Position the mirror centrally above a chimney breast or modern sideboard to establish a strong focal point, using its warm metallic finish to contrast against contemporary neutral paintwork.

Dust the ornate details lightly using a clean feather duster or dry soft brush, avoiding water or chemical cleaning solutions which can dissolve historic water-gilded finishes.
