This landscape overmantel mirror dates from the 19th century in the Regency style, made from giltwood, glass, and plaster in a gold colour. The architectural design incorporates three glass panels arranged in a three-pane configuration, flanked by fluted columns and topped with a decorative foliate frieze and ball moulding. Original bevelled plates are fitted within the timber and plaster frame. The structure stands 83 cm high and 144 cm wide. Position this grand Regency mirror above the mantel in a living room, dining room, or hallway to create a sense of scale and reflect natural light. The piece suits traditional and classic interior settings, offering a focal point for a fireplace surround.

An overmantel mirror is a wide, horizontally oriented mirror designed to sit directly above a fireplace mantelpiece. Popularised during the Georgian and Regency periods, these mirrors often featured three glass panels and neoclassical architectural motifs such as columns and friezes.

Traditional pieces were constructed from pine or lime wood covered with composition plaster mouldings, finished with gold leaf gilding. The mirror glass was typically set in multiple plates to accommodate manufacturing limits of the era.

Authentic examples typically exhibit hand-carved or moulded details, dark oxidisation or silvering loss on the glass, and natural wear to the gold leaf showing red bole underneath. They also frequently feature classical elements like fluted side pilasters and ball moulding along the cornice.

Position the mirror centrally above a fireplace or a contemporary sideboard to create a focal point that amplifies natural light. Combining the rich gold finish and architectural structure with neutral walls provides a refined contrast in modern living spaces.

Dust the frame gently using a soft, dry camel-hair brush or microfibre cloth, avoiding liquid cleaners or abrasive materials that can strip water gilding. For the glass, apply cleaner sparingly to a cloth rather than spraying directly to prevent moisture from seeping behind the frame.
