This Victorian toilet mirror dates from 1860 and follows an English Country House design vibe. The piece uses mahogany, glass, and brass materials, finished in a rich brown colour. Details include an arched top frame, finely carved barley twist support columns with turned finials, a serpentine plinth base, and a cylinder roll front storage compartment housing a central brass keyhole escutcheon. Practical dimensions measure 90 cm high, 73 cm wide, and 28 cm deep. Position this swing mirror on a sideboard top in a bedroom, dressing room, or hallway to add traditional character and functional surface reflection. The rich grain pattern of the mahogany timber and the turned wooden finials provide classic decorative interest suitable for period and traditional interior schemes.

FAQs

A Victorian toilet mirror, or dressing glass, is a freestanding mirror designed to rest upon a dressing table, chest of drawers, or vanity unit. Popular throughout the 19th century, these pieces feature a central mirror plate mounted on pivots between two carved upright posts, allowing the angle of reflection to be adjusted.

Victorian swing mirrors were predominantly constructed from solid hardwoods such as mahogany, walnut, or rosewood, often enhanced with highly figured flame mahogany or burr veneers. The mirror plates utilised silvered glass, while brass friction screws or tension knobs secured the swivel mechanism.

Authentic 19th-century examples typically feature hand-carved details such as barley-twist columns, turned finials, or serpentine bases. Examining the reverse reveals hand-sawn timber backing boards, original brass fixings, and natural oxidation or light mercury foxing within the glass mirror plate.

Position the mirror on top of a contemporary chest of drawers, sideboard, or dedicated vanity unit to create a focal point. Contrast the deep warm wood tones against modern painted walls, pairing the piece with neutral ceramics or understated brass accents.

Clean the wooden frame using a soft microfiber cloth and nourish the timber periodically with high-quality beeswax paste. Avoid spraying glass cleaner directly onto the mirror, applying cleaner to a cloth first to prevent liquid from seeping into the wooden frame or corroding the silver backing.
