Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 18TH CENTURY:
Mottling and dark spotting in the glass: mercury silvering showing age.
Carved gilt slip inside the frame: fashionable on dressing glasses from the 1760s.
Barber-pole chequer edging: fine eighteenth-century contrasting timber stringing.
Ogee bracket feet under the base: classic mid-Georgian cabinet design.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

This 18th century Chippendale toilet mirror follows a Georgian design vocabulary in dark brown mahogany with gilded accents. The rectangular glass plate rests within a shaped wooden frame featuring a gilded slip and pivots on turned brass supports topped with small finials. The upright posts rise from a rectangular box base decorated with chequer banding along the top edge. The front contains three small frieze drawers fitted with brass drop handles and a central keyhole escutcheon. The entire structure stands raised on ogee shaped bracket feet. Surface wear is visible across the dark reflective plate glass. Measuring 59 cm high, 38 cm wide, and 19 cm deep, the compact piece sits comfortably upon a dresser, chest of drawers, or sideboard in a bedroom, dressing room, or hallway interior.

FAQs

A toilet mirror, also known as a dressing glass or vanity mirror, is a small portable mirror designed to sit atop a dressing table, chest of drawers, or sideboard. Popularised in the 18th century, these pieces typically feature a swivelling glass plate supported by upright posts above a plinth base containing small storage drawers.

Georgian toilet mirrors were predominantly constructed from dense hardwoods such as Cuban mahogany, walnut, or satinwood. Key features often include hand-cut dovetail drawer joints, brass brassware including handles and side turning knobs, and gilded wood borders or carved accents.

Authentic 18th-century pieces display signs of hand-craftsmanship, such as hand-sawn secondary woods like pine or oak for drawer linings, original brass turnings, and shaped bracket feet. The mirror plate may show natural foxing or silvering degradation consistent with age, alongside carved detailing or a gilded inner frame slip.

Positioning an antique toilet mirror on a contemporary sideboard, dressing table, or hallway console creates a refined decorative focal point. Pairing rich mahogany wood with neutral plaster walls, contemporary ceramics, or minimalist brass accessories balances historic texture with clean modern aesthetics.

Dust the wooden frame regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year following the grain. Avoid chemical glass cleaners on original mirror plates, as moisture can seep behind the frame and accelerate silvering degradation.
