Windsor Large Farmhouse Armchair in Frutwood & Elm, C1890

Description

An exceptionally large and impressive Windsor Farmhouse Armchair in fruitwood with lyre shaped fretted splat and elm seat, featuring fretted back splat and shaped scroll over arms. Stamped by the maker on the rear edge of the seat ‘JL’ - possibly a member of the ‘Larner’ family, recorded as chair makers in Stokenchuch (near High Wycombe) in the latter part of the 19th century. (See: ‘The English Regional Chair’ by Dr Bernard Cotton (Antique Collectors’ Club) - index of Thames Valley chair makers)

Restoration to feet which have been tipped.

width at top comb : 65 cms (25.5”)

width at armbow : 56 cms (22”)

height : 116 cms (45.5”)

depth (from back of top hoop to front of legs) : 68 cms (26.75”)

seat height: 46 cms (18”) between front arm supports: 41 cms (16”) seat depth (from bottom of splat to front edge of seat) 51cms (20”)
