This Victorian overmantel mirror dates from 1870 and displays an arch top silhouette framed in gold-coloured giltwood and gesso over pine. The ornate top features a central scrolled crest with acanthus leaf motifs, while the sides are detailed with scrolling foliate decoration, rosettes, and beaded moulding framing the glass plate. The mirror plate exhibits signs of deterioration with speckling and wear across its surface, reflecting its age, and rests upon wide scrolled feet at the base. Measuring 107 cm high by 130 cm wide with a depth of 8 cm, the piece is designed for placement directly above a mantelpiece in a living room, drawing room, or hallway. Positioned on a wall or mantel shelf, this period glass creates a focal point in traditional or eclectic interiors. The warm gold finish complements period fireplaces and harmonises with neutral or richly decorated walls. The robust construction allows for reliable daily use, serving as both a functional looking-glass and a decorative wall feature that reflects light around interior spaces. The substantial proportions anchor architectural features within a room without overwhelming surrounding furnishings.

Victorian overmantel mirrors were designed during the nineteenth century specifically to mount above fireplace hearths, featuring flat bases, arched tops, and ornate gilt cresting influenced by Rococo and Classical Revival styles.

Frames were constructed from softwood such as pine or lime, carved or covered with molded gesso details, and coated in gold leaf using water or oil gilding techniques over iron-red bole ground.

Authentic pieces feature heavy timber backing boards, visible joints, genuine gesso substrate with minor hairline cracking, and natural foxing or oxidisation across the original glass mirror plate.

Position the mirror directly above a fireplace surround, console table, or low sideboard to reflect ambient light and create a central architectural focal point within contemporary or period settings.

Dust the frame periodically with a soft, dry camel-hair brush, avoiding wet cloths, water, or solvent cleaners that can dissolve delicate gesso mouldings and remove gold leaf coatings.
