Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A 19th-century overmantel mirror, often referred to as a chimney glass, is a horizontally proportioned wall mirror designed specifically to sit directly above a fireplace mantlepiece. These mirrors typically featured ornate gilded gesso or carved wood frames with classical motifs designed to reflect candlelight across drawing rooms.

Period gilt mirrors were constructed using pine or oak frames layered with gesso, carved plaster details, and covered in thin layers of gold leaf over coloured clay bole. The mirror plates were traditionally made from silvered glass or mercury-backed glass held in place by wooden backing boards.

Authentic pieces generally display original timber backing planks, natural foxing or oxidisation on the glass plate, and subtle wear to the gold leaf revealing the red or yellow clay bole beneath. The gilding often shows age-related crazing in the gesso rather than smooth modern paint finishes.

Positioning a large gilt mirror above a contemporary fireplace creates an impactful visual anchor that bridges historical and modern aesthetics. Alternatively, placing the frame directly on top of a low dining room sideboard or leaning it against a neutral wall provides a relaxed, curated look.

Clean the gilded frame gently using a soft, dry camel-hair brush to remove dust without disturbing delicate gold leafing. Avoid using liquid cleaners, water, or commercial polishes on water-gilded surfaces, and clean the glass plate using a damp micro-fibre cloth while shielding the frame.
