A true set of 16 generously proportioned and extremely comfortable Windsor style comb back captain’s chairs in ash, alder and elm c1900, Lancashire, England.
10 chairs are in alder with ash legs and elm seats and 6 chairs, possibly slightly later made, in exactly the same style, all in alder.
The most common form of captain’s chair features a low curved cresting rail above the arm bow whereas these chairs feature an unusual comb back top rail separated from the arm bow by turned spindles, echoing the design of the spindles uniting the arm bow to the seat.
