FAQs

Gilt mirrors gained prominence during the 17th and 18th centuries in Europe, particularly in France and England, where artisans applied thin layers of gold leaf to carved wooden frames to reflect wealth and status.

Traditional frames are constructed from softwoods such as pine or gesso-coated hardwoods, hand-carved, and finished with water gilding or oil gilding using genuine gold leaf over a prepared bole layer.

Authenticity is identified by hand-carved wooden construction under the gesso, signs of oxidisation on the original mercury or silvered glass plate, and age-related wear to the gold leaf.

An antique gilt mirror works effectively as a statement focal point when mounted above a contemporary minimalist fireplace or leaned against a neutral wall to create contrast between old and new design elements.

Dust the frame gently with a soft, dry brush and clean the glass using a microfiber cloth and a mild glass cleaner, taking care to avoid getting moisture on the delicate gilded surface.
