This nineteenth-century French Napoleon III crapaud armchair has a wide, low seat and a curved tub back. It is made of ebonised wood and upholstered in cream calico and linen with deep buttoning, scroll-shaped arms, and turned front legs. The wooden frame is finished in a solid black, contrasting with the pale fabric which displays visible signs of wear, fraying, and age across the seat and backrest. It measures 72 cm high, 71 cm wide, and 74 cm deep, with a seat depth of 56 cm. In a modern interior, this piece serves as an occasional seat in a living room, bedroom, or dressing room. The low profile and deep buttoning provide a comfortable lounge space while maintaining a traditional French chateau aesthetic. The neutral tones of the cream upholstery and black frame allow it to integrate into various decorative schemes, whether placed beside a fireplace, in a reading corner, or as a standalone accent piece.

A crapaud armchair is a traditional 19th-century French low-seated tub chair characterised by a rounded back, deep-buttoned upholstery, and short legs. Popularised during the Napoleon III period, the name derives from the French word for toad due to its squat, low-profile silhouette.

These chairs were constructed using solid hardwood frames, often oak or beech, paired with ebonised or natural turned legs. Internal upholstery typically utilised hand-tied steel coil springs, jute webbing, hair or fibre padding, covered in calico linen under-cloth before final fabric application.

Authentic period examples feature hand-cut joinery, original horsehair or coir stuffing, hand-stitched tufting, and traditional brass castors on turned wooden legs. Frame construction shows natural age, traditional mortise and tenon joints, and structural tacks rather than modern staples.

A crapaud chair functions as a versatile accent piece in modern dressing rooms, bedrooms, or living spaces. It can be displayed in its raw calico state for textural contrast or reupholstered in contemporary velvet or linen to complement transitional and classic decor schemes.

Keep the chair away from direct heat sources and direct sunlight to prevent timber shrinkage and fabric fading. Clean textile surfaces using a soft brush or low-suction vacuum cleaner attachment, and treat exposed woodwork with clear natural beeswax.
