FAQs

Gilt-framed mirrors gained significant popularity during the 18th and 19th centuries, particularly in French and English interior design, where gold leaf was applied to wooden frames to reflect candlelight and brighten rooms.

These pieces typically feature a hand-carved wooden or composition frame coated in gesso and gold leaf, housing a silvered glass mirror plate secured with traditional backing boards.

Authenticity is often indicated by hand-applied gesso, subtle wear and oxidisation on the mirror plate, foxing, and traditional joinery methods visible on the reverse.

Placing the mirror above a modern minimalist sideboard or fireplace mantel creates a striking contrast between historic ornate craftsmanship and clean, contemporary lines.

Clean the glass carefully with a microfibre cloth and a neutral cleaner, avoiding harsh chemicals on the gilt frame to protect the delicate gold leaf finish from damage.
