This nineteenth-century wall mirror originates from France in the Louis Philippe style, presenting a classic profile designed for hanging. The rectangular wooden structure features a rounded top edge, embellished with carved floral spandrels, leaf motifs, and a beaded inner moulding surrounding the glass. The original gilded finish displays a warm gold tone with a red bole undertone showing through the worn areas, alongside light foxing across the reflective surface. Measuring 106 cm high by 85 cm wide with a 5 cm depth, the piece makes a substantial yet practical statement in domestic interiors. Homeowners today typically position a wall-mounted mirror of this style above a living room mantelpiece, in a hallway to enhance natural light, or in a bedroom as a traditional dressing accent.

FAQs

Originating in 19th-century France, Louis Philippe mirrors are characterised by rounded upper corners, a flat base, and clean profiles wrapped in gilded gesso moulding.

These frames were constructed using carved timber covered in gesso and red clay bole, over which thin gold leaf was applied, framing mercury or silvered mirror glass.

Authentic pieces exhibit natural foxing or de-silvering on the mirror glass, hand-cut timber backing boards, and visible red bole showing through areas of worn gilding.

Position the mirror above a mantlepiece or contemporary console table to create visual contrast between period detailing and clean contemporary lines.

Dust the gilded gesso frame gently with a dry soft brush without water, and clean the glass using a lightly dampened microfibre cloth while avoiding chemical solvents.
