FAQs

Victorian inlaid mahogany dining chairs typically feature rich hardwood frames decorated with delicate marquetry or stringing, coupled with pierced back splats and upholstered seats. Popular in late 19th-century dining rooms, these chairs reflect the eras focus on formal entertaining and refined woodworking.

Cabinetmakers primarily utilised solid or veneered mahogany for the structural frame, incorporating boxwood or satinwood for decorative inlay motifs. Traditional joinery methods like mortise-and-tenon joints were combined with horsehair or webbed padding for the upholstered cushions.

Authentic period examples display hand-cut joinery, natural timber oxidisation on unvarnished undersides, and slight irregularities from manual hand-tooling. Original seat frames frequently exhibit traditional hand-tacked webbing rather than modern staple fastenings.

Combining dark mahogany chairs with a contemporary oak or glass dining table creates a balanced juxtaposition between modern and classic elements. Reupholstering the seats in contemporary linen or subtle neutral fabric easily updates the aesthetic for modern interiors.

Maintain the timber by dusting regularly with a lint-free cloth and applying beeswax polish once or twice a year following the natural grain. Position the chairs away from direct sunlight, radiators, and damp environments to prevent wood warping and inlay separation.
