This set of four Victorian dining chairs exhibits a medium brown mahogany timber construction with distinctive vase splat backs adorned with inlaid linear motifs and Greek key corner details. Each piece stands on ring-turned front legs and features drop-in seat pads covered in contrasting pale blue and green fabric upholstery, complemented by horizontal moulding details across the seat rails. The dimensions are 87 cm high, 44 cm wide, and 56 cm deep, with a seat height of 45 cm. Suitable for everyday seating around a dining table in a traditional home, these chairs integrate well into a dining room or kitchen space to provide functional seating for family meals and gatherings. Their classic silhouette and natural wood grain finish complement a range of interior settings while offering the practical utility expected of antique dining furniture.

FAQs

Maintain timber surfaces by dusting regularly with a soft, lint-free cloth and applying a quality beeswax polish once or twice a year. Keep mahogany away from direct heat sources and direct sunlight to prevent timber shrinkage or uneven fading.

Combining rich mahogany dining chairs with a contemporary oak, glass, or marble table creates an engaging contrast between traditional craftsmanship and modern design. Updating the drop-in seat fabric with neutral linen or textured wool modernises the silhouette.

Authentic period pieces show signs of historic hand-tooling, such as irregular saw marks on the undersides of seat frames, patinated timber surfaces, and hand-cut inlay work. Original drop-in seat frames typically show age-related oxidisation on the unpolished wood.

Chairs of this period are predominantly crafted from solid mahogany, favoured for its dense grain and durability. Construction relies on traditional mortise and tenon joinery, often complemented by drop-in upholstered seat pads fitted into framed seat rails.

Vase splat dining chairs draw inspiration from 18th-century Chippendale and Queen Anne designs, remaining popular through the 19th century. They feature a central upright back support shaped like an urn or vase, integrated into a timber frame that often includes turned legs and classical inlay details.
