Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This set of four Victorian dining chairs dates from the 19th century and is made of warm brown walnut. Each chair has an open balloon-shaped back with carved leaf ornament on the upper section and scrollwork on the lower back, alongside shaped wooden frames, slender cabriole front legs with carved knees, and gently swept rear legs. The seats are upholstered in pale cream fabric with decorative braid edging, and the wood shows a natural polished finish with visible grain. The chairs measure 85 cm high, 44 cm wide, and 46 cm deep, and show minor signs of wear with some marking to the fabric. These chairs suit placement around a dining table or as occasional seating in a living room, hallway, or bedroom within an English country house interior. The set combines traditional craftsmanship with practical utility, offering a light and graceful appearance typical of mid-Victorian dining furniture. The combination of carved foliate details and curved wooden frames provides a classic aesthetic suited to traditional and period home settings.

FAQs

Balloon back chairs are a mid-to-late Victorian seating style characterised by a rounded, loop-shaped backrest framing an open centre, frequently decorated with carved foliate or scroll motifs at the waist and crest rail.

These chairs were crafted from dense hardwoods such as walnut, mahogany, or rosewood, assembled using mortise and tenon joinery, and fitted with upholstered drop-in or stuff-over seats incorporating webbing and horsehair padding.

Authentic 19th-century examples show hand-carved detailing, visible hand-cut joinery on the underside, natural age-related timber oxidation, and slight structural variations indicative of hand construction.

Position these period chairs around a minimalist modern table to create visual contrast, or reupholster the seats in contemporary linen or textured fabrics to blend traditional frames into current schemes.

Dust the timber frames regularly with a dry cloth and apply a natural beeswax polish periodically to protect the original finish, keeping the timber away from direct heat sources to prevent warping.
