The barrel back armchair, featuring a continuous curved back and arms, gained popularity during the 18th century in Georgian Britain, designed specifically to protect sitters from drafts.

Authentic period frames are constructed from solid hardwoods such as mahogany or oak, traditionally joined with mortise and tenon techniques, and historically stuffed with materials like horsehair, wool, and straw over webbing.

Authentication relies on examining timber ageing, hand-cut joinery, tool marks, and traditional upholstery tack holes rather than modern staples, alongside period-appropriate proportions.

Placing an unrestored frame in a modern room provides textural contrast, allowing the exposed structural form and history to serve as a sculptural focal point before reupholstery.

Preservation involves maintaining stable indoor humidity levels, avoiding direct sunlight to prevent timber drying, and applying microcrystalline wax sparingly to nourish the exposed wood.
