The Robert Adam style draws heavily on classical antiquity, featuring symmetrical motifs such as urns, husks, paterae, and delicate foliate scrolls inspired by excavations in Pompeii and Herculaneum.

These pieces were typically carved from softwoods such as pine or lime, then coated with multiple layers of gesso. Gold leaf was subsequently applied over a red bole base and burnished to achieve a brilliant metallic lustre.

Authenticity is assessed through the construction of the wooden frame, hand-carved detailing, the presence of genuine water gilding over gesso, and the age-related oxidisation or foxing on the original mercury or silvered glass plate.

An antique giltwood mirror serves as a striking focal point when hung above a minimalist fireplace mantel or contrasted against a dark, moody feature wall to highlight its metallic craftsmanship and classical silhouette.

Giltwood should be kept away from direct sunlight and moisture fluctuations. Dusting must be performed extremely gently with a soft, dry brush or feather duster, avoiding any liquid cleaners or chemical polishes which can strip the delicate gold leaf.
