Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This Victorian wall mirror dates from the nineteenth century and is designed in a French Chateau style. The broad giltwood frame holds an oval aperture enclosing a bevelled mirror plate, finished in a warm gold colour. The wooden frame displays extensive craftsmanship through relief moulding, including prominent scrollwork carving and foliate acanthus motifs around the perimeter, complemented by a beaded inner rim. Visible surface details include gentle tarnishing and ageing marks across the reflective glass, alongside fine textural variations in the carved composition ornaments. Measuring 89 cm wide by 107 cm high with a 6 cm depth, this decorative hanging piece functions well when mounted above a mantel in a living room, hallway, or bedroom interior.

FAQs

Giltwood oval mirrors from the nineteenth century are defined by carved wooden or composition frames coated with fine gold leaf over a prepared gesso substrate, often featuring classical foliage, scrolls, and beaded mouldings.

These frames were constructed from softwoods or hardwoods shaped with carved details, covered in gessoa mixture of chalk and binderand finished using either water gilding or oil gilding with genuine gold leaf.

Authentic pieces exhibit signs of natural age including subtle wear to the gold leaf revealing red or yellow clay bole beneath, dark oxidisation spots on silvered mirror glass, and hand-cut timber backing boards.

A giltwood oval mirror can be mounted above a contemporary console table or fireplace mantelpiece to create a focal point, drawing contrast between detailed historical craftsmanship and clean modern architecture.

Dust the frame gently using a soft, dry camel-hair brush or feather duster, avoiding water, chemical polishes, or liquid cleaners, as moisture can dissolve the water-soluble gesso layer beneath the gold leaf.
