Rare Child`s Armchair

Status: This item has been sold
Sold by: Havard and Havard

A delightful oak armchair of small size, presumably intended for a child, with an undulating cresting rail above a recessed central panel and seat. The downswept arms supported by ball-turned front legs joined by a baluster and ring-turned front stretcher. The patina is excellent with a rich contrast of colours.

Probably Welsh, circa 1690-1720.

Some old patches and repairs and height loss to the rear feet but large enough and strong enough to comfortably accommodate an adult.

Literature:

For an armchair of similar scale see Early British Chairs and Seats by Tobias Jellinek, page 151, plate 172, where the authot suggests the chair illustrated may be an “example of a “littel chayre” so often referred to in early inventories”.
