Regency furniture, spanning roughly from 1811 to 1820, is characterised by neoclassical influences inspired by ancient Greek, Roman, and Egyptian forms. It frequently features clean classical proportions, dark ebonised finishes, ormolu mounts, and curule or X-framed structural elements.

These pieces were typically constructed from native hardwoods such as oak, mahogany, or beech, often treated with an ebonised finish to mimic exotic ebony. Joinery involved precise turning, curved laminated or steam-bent X-frames, and traditional upholstery methods utilising horsehair and webbing.

Authentic pieces exhibit period-appropriate joinery, hand-turned wooden components, and natural ageing of the timber and finish. Examination of the interior framing, upholstery webbing, and wear patterns on the ebonisation can help determine the age and provenance.

These versatile pieces can be placed at the foot of a bed, used as occasional seating in a drawing room, or positioned in an empty corner to add architectural interest. Their contrasting dark frames and vibrant upholstery provide a striking focal point that bridges traditional and contemporary spaces.

Preserve the ebonised finish by keeping the timber away from direct sunlight and fluctuating humidity levels to prevent cracking or fading. Dust regularly with a soft, dry cloth and apply a microcrystalline wax sparingly to maintain the protective sheen without harming the historic surface.
