Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Overmantel mirrors were designed during the 18th and 19th centuries specifically to sit directly above a fireplace mantelpiece. They typically feature wide proportions and decorative cresting to reflect light and anchor the architectural scheme of a reception room.

These frames were constructed using carved wood or moulded composition applied over a timber substrate. Thin sheets of gold leaf were then applied over a clay bole ground using traditional water gilding or oil gilding techniques.

Original period pieces display mercury-amalgamated or early silvered glass with subtle foxing and oxidation. The reverse side usually reveals hand-sawn wood backboards, while the gilded frame shows gentle wear exposing the underlying red or grey clay bole.

Position the mirror above a living room fireplace or a grand console table to establish a central focal point. Combining intricate 19th-century gilding with clean-lined modern furniture creates a balanced, eclectic aesthetic.

Dust the frame gently using a soft dry brush or feather duster, avoiding water or chemical cleaning solutions that can dissolve gold leaf. Clean the mirror glass carefully with a slightly damp microfiber cloth, preventing moisture from entering the frame edge.
