Pier mirrors originated in the late 17th century, designed specifically to be hung on the narrow wall space, or pier, between two windows. In 19th-century France, these grand vertical glasses became central features in formal salons, designed to reflect light and enhance the sense of space within formal rooms.

Authentic period mirrors were constructed using carved softwood or hardwood frames coated with multiple layers of gesso. The gesso was meticulously hand-carved with ornamental details before being water-gilded or oil-gilded with genuine gold leaf. The glass panels were typically hand-silvered and featured bevelled edges.

Authentication involves examining the reverse of the frame for aged, oxidised wood and hand-cut joinery. The gesso layer should exhibit fine craquelure and minor losses consistent with age, and the mirror plate often shows slight foxing, ghosting, or mercury spotting rather than uniform modern reflections.

Pairing an ornate historical mirror with clean-lined, contemporary furnishings creates a striking visual contrast. Placing the piece opposite a window maximises natural light, while resting it directly on the floor against a neutral wall adds height and architectural interest to the room.

Giltwood surfaces are extremely delicate and sensitive to moisture; they should only be dusted lightly with a dry, soft ostrich feather duster. Avoid using any liquid cleaners, chemical sprays, or abrasive cloths, and maintain stable indoor humidity levels to prevent the gesso from cracking.
