FAQs

Overmantel mirrors gained immense popularity during the Victorian era, specifically designed to be hung directly above fireplace mantelpieces to reflect candlelight and natural daylight into principal reception rooms.

These frames are typically constructed from carved wood or composition moulding (gesso) built over a wooden substrate, finished with gold leaf or metallic paint, and fitted with heavy silvered sheet glass.

Authentic pieces often exhibit signs of age such as foxing on the mirror plate, hand-bevelled edges, original timber backing boards secured with old screws, and craquelure or minor losses within the gesso layer.

Positioning an arched overmantel mirror above a fireplace or anchoring it directly to a living room wall creates an illusion of expanded space and introduces a classical architectural focal point.

Clean the glass surface sparingly with a soft, lint-free cloth and mild glass cleaner, avoiding harsh chemical sprays that could seep behind the frame and damage the silvered backing or delicate gilt finish.
