This Georgian snuff box originates from eighteenth-century South Staffordshire, made from copper, enamel and gilded metal with hand-painted landscape and floral motifs on a white body. The hinged lid displays figures and a boat near classical ruins in blue, brown and red tones, while the sides show painted purple and yellow floral sprays above raised scrollwork mouldings, framed by decorative gilded metal mounts. Fine crackling is visible across the white enamel surface. Practical dimensions measure 3.8 cm high, 8.2 cm wide and 6.3 cm deep. Collectors and antique enthusiasts display small decorative containers of this type on a mantelpiece, side table or display cabinet within an English Country House interior. It suits placement in a study, drawing room or hallway as a decorative tabletop accessory or small storage piece for small keepsakes.

FAQs

During the mid-to-late eighteenth century, South Staffordshire and nearby Bilston became prominent centres for enamelling in England. Craftsmen produced small, portable containers such as snuff boxes, patch boxes, and bonbonnieres decorated with hand-painted pastoral scenes, landscapes, and floral motifs.

These boxes were constructed by forming thin copper sheet bases, applying coats of opaque white enamel glass powder, and firing them at high temperatures. Detail was added using vitreous enamel paints, after which the separate lid and base were joined using gilded metal or brass mounts with a hinge mechanism.

Authentic period pieces often show subtle hand-painted variations, fine hairline crazing in the glaze, and soft wear to the original metal mounts. The copper base may show oxidisation on unglazed interior edges, and the underside typically features hand-applied relief or scroll work.
