Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

A 19th-century giltwood pier mirror is characterised by its tall, vertical proportions, traditionally designed to hang on the wall space between two windows. These pieces feature carved wooden frames coated in thin sheets of gold leaf, reflecting light into rooms during an era before electric lighting.

These mirrors typically utilise a softwood or hardwood core, such as pine or gesso-coated composition ornaments, finished with gold leaf applied over a red bole layer. The glass plates from this period often exhibit minor imperfections, waviness, and silver oxidisation due to historical manufacturing methods.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-carved details, layered gesso under gold leaf, and traditional joinery on the reverse. Old mirror glass frequently shows signs of foxing, while the underlying timber displays shrinkage cracks, tool marks, and age-appropriate wear consistent with nineteenth-century craftsmanship.

Interior designers often hang a large giltwood mirror above a fireplace mantel or position it opposite a window to amplify natural light and create a sense of scale. The ornate gold frame provides a striking contrast against minimalist walls, neutral colour palettes, or modern architectural finishes.

Dusting should be performed gently using a soft, dry ostrich feather brush, avoiding any chemical cleaners, moisture, or abrasive cloths that can strip the delicate gold leaf. Glass surfaces can be cleaned sparingly with a lint-free cloth and mild glass cleaner, ensuring liquid does not seep behind the frame.
