FAQs

Overmantel mirrors gained significant popularity during the 18th and 19th centuries, specifically designed to be hung directly above a fireplace mantel to reflect candlelight and natural daylight into a room.

Authentic period mirrors typically feature a hand-carved wooden or composition base applied over timber, coated with a layer of gesso, and finished with gold leaf or metallic paint.

Indicators of age include old silvering degradation on the glass plate, hand-beveled edges where applicable, traditional joinery on the wooden backboards, and the presence of crusted gesso beneath the gilding.

Placing an arched gilt mirror above a functional fireplace or resting it against a living room wall creates an effective focal point that amplifies spatial volume and light.

Dust the frame gently with a soft, dry cloth and avoid chemical cleaning agents, moisture, or direct sunlight to prevent degradation of the delicate gesso and metallic finish.
