Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Victorian gilt overmantel mirror is a 19th-century wall mirror designed to sit directly above a fireplace mantlepiece. These mirrors feature wooden frames coated in gesso and finished with gold leafing, incorporating classical or revival architectural details.

These mirrors were constructed using timber framesoften pine or oaklayered with moulded gesso plaster to create decorative relief patterns. The surfaces were then painted with clay bole and covered with thin sheets of genuine gold leaf.

Authentic period frames show natural wear to the gilding, often revealing the reddish or grey clay bole underneath. Look for hand-finished pine backboards, minor cracking in the gesso plaster, and slight foxing or distress on the original mirror glass.

Position the mirror centrally above a working or decorative fireplace to draw the eye upwards and increase natural room light. Alternatively, mount it above a hallway console table or floating shelf to serve as a structural focal point.

Dust the frame regularly using a soft, dry camel-hair brush or feather duster without applying pressure. Avoid using liquid cleaners, solvents, or damp cloths on the gilt surfaces, as water dissolves historical gesso and damages thin gold leaf.
