This William IV or early Victorian armchair dates to around 1850 and is formed from rich dark brown mahogany timber with a strong structural frame. The piece stands on turned front legs with reeded detail and sweeping back legs, all fitted with original brass castors. Carved scroll arm terminals frame the seat structure, whilst the interior retains an aged beige calico lining with buttoned tufting over horsehair stuffing, currently showing considerable wear and tear across the arms and backrest, presenting an ideal restoration project for a new cover. The dimensions are 92 cm high by 67 cm wide and 80 cm deep. Such a chair suits placement within a traditional gentleman's library or study once fully upholstered.

19th-century armchairs, particularly from the William IV and Victorian eras, are defined by heavy solid hardwood construction, hand-carved scroll detailing, turned or fluted legs, and brass castors designed for mobility around living spaces.

Frames were typically constructed from solid mahogany, walnut, or rosewood using traditional mortise-and-tenon joinery. Internal padding relied on jute webbing, coiled steel springs, natural horsehair, and cotton calico lining.

Look for hand-sawn timber marks on internal frame rails, original brass castors secured with square-headed screws, natural patina and colour variations in the exposed hardwood, and historic upholstery tack marks along the frame perimeter.

Reupholstering a 19th-century frame in crisp contemporary linen, rich velvet, or patterned wool creates an effective contrast between historic woodwork and modern interior textiles.

The exposed hardwood timber should be dusted regularly with a soft cloth and conditioned annually with beeswax polish, keeping the piece away from direct heat sources to prevent wood shrinkage.
