This seventeenth-century wall mirror belongs to the William and Mary period. The rectangular frame uses walnut and oak, finished with a rich brown oyster veneer and cross-grain timber moulding in a cushion-moulded design. Visible details include a small metal suspension ring at the top edge, distinctive circular wood grain patterns across the wide timber borders, and an old replacement mirror glass plate with surface marks. The frame measures 76 cm high and 67 cm wide. In a contemporary home, this mirror suits placement above a sideboard in a hallway, dining room, or living space. The piece brings an authentic English country house character to traditional or transitional interiors while providing functional wall decor.

Maintain stable humidity levels within the room to prevent movement in the underlying timber, which can cause delicate veneers to lift. Dust gently with a dry microfibre cloth and apply high-grade beeswax sparingly to protect the historic timber surface.

Position the frame above a minimalist console table or fireplace mantelpiece to allow its distinct geometric woodwork to serve as a visual focal point. Combining dark, patterned timber with modern lighting highlights the contrast between historical craftsmanship and contemporary decor.

Authentic period examples exhibit hand-cut veneers of slight variation in thickness, subtle surface crazing in the original finish, and hand-sawn timber backing boards. The glass often shows historical desilverisation, and the frame profile typically features deep cushion mouldings.

Craftspeople primarily utilised walnut, laburnum, olivewood, or kingwood branches laid over a solid pine or oak carcass. The cross-cut timber veneers were systematically fitted together like a mosaic to form repeating geometric patterns across moulded surfaces.

Oyster veneer refers to thin slices of timber cut transversely from small branches or saplings, revealing concentric growth rings resembling oyster shells. Popularised during the late 17th century in Britain and Holland, this technique was frequently applied to mirror frames and cabinetry.
