Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This 18th century child's wainscot armchair follows the Jacobean style, constructed from solid oak with a dark brown finish. The timber displays visible surface wear, scratches, and a weathered patina on the arms and seat. The chair features a rectangular backrest with a carved floral centre panel, framed by linear mouldings and surmounted by a carved top rail. Sloping arms curve outward to support the uprights, joined with pegged construction. Below the flat seat, the front rail shows continuous guilloche carving interspersed with circular rosette motifs, supported by four straight vertical legs. Dimensions measure 89 cm high, 54 cm wide, and 43 cm deep. This miniature seating piece suits display in a period room, hallway, or study within a traditional English country house.

FAQs

A wainscot chair is a type of timber armchair featuring a solid panelled back, prominent in England and Western Europe during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.

Wainscot chairs were primarily constructed from solid quarter-sawn oak, assembled using mortise and tenon joinery secured with hand-carved wooden pegs.

Authentic early wainscot chairs typically exhibit peg joinery, hand-planed panel surfaces, natural oak shrinkage along the grain, and historical wear on lower stretchers and armrests.

A childs wainscot chair functions as an accent piece when placed in a fireplace alcove, entryway corner, or positioned alongside larger period oak furniture to add structural texture.

Maintain carved oak furniture by dusting regularly with a soft dry cloth and applying a clear beeswax polish annually to protect the surface patination.
