This late seventeenth-century Carolean side chair is constructed from walnut with a dark brown finish and measures 112 cm high by 47 cm wide and 38.5 cm deep. The high backrest includes a carved crest rail with floral cresting, scratch-carved decoration, and double vertical woven cane panels flanked by turned uprights terminating in rounded finials. Below, the seat incorporates a woven cane insert supported by turned legs joined by a box stretcher featuring turned elements and block feet. One back panel shows evidence of later caning alongside treated and dead old worm damage, presenting a genuine surface with visible age wear. Suitable for a gentleman's library or bedroom setting, the lightweight caned construction provides a practical and historic seating option for interior spaces.

Late 17th-century Carolean seating typically features high backrests, detailed wood carving, woven cane panels, turned legs, and decorative stretchers, reflecting European Baroque influences popular during the English Restoration period.

Craftspeople primarily utilised solid walnut or oak for the structural framing, paired with hand-woven rattan cane for the back panels and seat inserts to create lightweight yet resilient seating surfaces.

Authentic period chairs often display hand-carved cresting rails, traditional pegged mortise and tenon joinery, subtle asymmetry from hand-tooling, and grooves cut directly into the timber frame for cane anchoring.

A tall single caned chair functions effectively as a architectural accent in a hallway, bedroom corner, or desk space, offering visual texture and historical contrast against contemporary backdrops.

Timber surfaces require occasional application of natural beeswax polish to maintain hydration, while woven cane components should be kept away from direct heat sources and dry environments to prevent cracking.
