This French Empire style wall mirror dates from 1870 in the Grand Regency manner. The piece has a warm brown mahogany frame with a moulded top cornice and an original glass plate. Side columns flank the central mirror glass, decorated with brass capitals and plinths at the top and bottom. The rectangular mirror stands 170 cm high, 103 cm wide, and 13 cm deep. In a contemporary interior, this wall mirror suits placement above a sideboard in a dining room or hallway. The rich timber grain and polished brass mounts add formal architectural presence to a traditional or eclectic space.

FAQs

Empire style mahogany mirrors are defined by neoclassical architectural influences, featuring prominent columns, straight pediment cornices, and decorative brass or gilded mounts set against dark wood.

These mirrors typically feature solid mahogany or mahogany veneers over pine backboards, mercury or silvered glass plates, and cast brass or bronze decorative capitals and bases.

Authentic pieces generally display hand-joined timber framing, original secondary wood backing, silvering oxidation or gentle foxing on the glass, and hand-tooled metal fittings.

Mount the mirror above a contemporary console table or fireplace mantelpiece to create a focal point that reflects natural light and introduces warm wood tones into the space.

Dust the timber frame regularly with a dry soft cloth, apply natural beeswax sparingly to preserve the wood finish, and clean the glass plate with non-ammonia cleaner applied directly to a cloth rather than the mirror.
