Chinoiserie emerged in Europe during the 17th and 18th centuries as a Western interpretation and imitation of Chinese and East Asian artistic traditions, heavily popularised during the Georgian era through trade with the East India Company.

Traditional pieces are typically constructed from pine or hardwoods, built up with multiple layers of pigmented resin or varnish known as japanning, and embellished with raised or flat gilt motifs using gold leaf.

Authentic period pieces often exhibit hand-carved wooden frames, early forms of applied gesso, genuine hand-gilding, and historically accurate mirror glass displaying subtle imperfections, oxidisation, or bevelled edges.

This piece works effectively as a focal point above a mantelpiece or console table, contrasting against neutral or dark moody walls to highlight the vibrant red lacquer and intricate gilt detailing.

Keep gilded and lacquered items out of direct sunlight and away from heat sources to prevent cracking, and clean them gently with a dry, soft microfibre cloth without using chemical cleaning agents.
