Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This Continental Rococo painted wall mirror dates from the 1920 period. The wooden frame displays a sage green and gold colour scheme with distressed gilding and minor paint losses. Decorative elements include a hand-painted scrolled pediment at the top, an arched inner frame, and hand-painted foliage motifs across the surface. The mirror incorporates a later distressed glass plate within its rectangular construction. The piece measures 95 cm high, 65 cm wide, and 5 cm deep. Such a decorative mirror suits placement above the mantel in a living room, dining room, or hallway. The French Chateau design vibe integrates well with traditional or eclectic interior schemes. Homeowners hang this wall mirror securely using appropriate fixings to add light and reflection to a chosen space. The wooden frame provides a practical interior accessory that complements existing painted furniture and decorative wall treatments.

FAQs

Continental painted wall mirrors typically feature hand-carved softwoods finished with gesso, distemper paint, and gilded highlights. Common regional hallmarks include serpentine pediments, shaped inner archways, and soft pastel or earth-toned painted surfaces decorated with floral sprays or scrollwork.

Frames were primarily constructed from pine, lime, or poplar wood coated with a gesso base layer. Decorative finishings combined mineral-based pigments, water gilding or oil gilding using gold leaf, and mercury or silvered glass plates.

Authentic painted frames exhibit natural age wear, including fine craquelure across the paint surface, historic wood shrinkage near joinery, and exposed gesso or dark bole under layers where gilt or paint has naturally worn away.

A distressed painted mirror acts as a textural focal point when mounted above a simple modern console or fireplace mantelpiece. Combining historic painted surfaces with clean architectural lines creates balanced visual contrast in contemporary spaces.

Dust the frame gently using a soft, dry camel-hair brush to prevent lifting loose paint flakes. Avoid liquid cleaning agents, water, or commercial polishes on painted or gilded gesso surfaces, and clean the glass plate separately using a controlled application of damp microfiber cloth.
