Dimensions:W: 97cm (38.2")H: 177cm (69.7")

Elegant Antique French gilt mirror in excellent condition.

It dates from the very early 1800s.

Its beautiful real gilt (gold leaf) on gesso frame has a large unusual crest of grapes and vine leaves and pretty ornate floral detail to its corners,

It has its lovely original mercury glass which gives a reflection and sparkle like no other. Mercury glass was not made after 1835 and is the glass used for the Palace of Versailles mirrors. It has no scratches.

It would make the perfect overmantel or mirror above a console perhaps.

French giltwood mirrors gained prominence during the Louis XIV, XV, and XVI periods, characterised by elaborate hand-carved wooden frames coated in thin layers of gold leaf to reflect candlelight and demonstrate wealth.

Authentic period pieces are traditionally crafted from carved softwoods or hardwoods such as pine or oak, coated in gesso, meticulously hand-gilded with gold leaf, and fitted with hand-silvered mercury or mirror glass.

Authenticity is indicated by heavy, hand-carved wooden frames rather than resin or plastic moulds, historical gesso cracking, foxing or oxidisation on the antique glass plate, and traditional joinery on the reverse.
