The Adam style emerged in 18th-century Britain under architect Robert Adam, drawing heavy inspiration from classical Greek and Roman antiquities. Key characteristics include refined Neoclassical proportions, delicate festoons, urns, beaded borders, and ribbon bow cresting.

Frames were typically constructed from carved timber or moulded gesso over wood. The surface was then finished using water gilding or oil gilding techniques with thin leaves of gold applied over a clay bole base.
