Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This Victorian Gothic Revival swivel desk chair from 1880 is fashioned from solid oak with a warm brown timber finish and stands 77.4 cm high, 64.7 cm wide, and 58.4 cm deep. The seating comprises a circular upholstered cushion covered in tan leather, secured around the perimeter with individual brass upholstery tacks. A continuous curved wooden crest rail wraps around the upper backrest, supported by intricately carved vertical pillars forming the armrests and a central foliate splat featuring detailed leaf and scroll carvings. The structure rests upon four robust legs terminating in carved claw feet with prominent talons. Positioned in a study, home office, or a gentleman's library, this functional desk chair provides fully rotating movement for seated tasks. The dark honey and amber tones of the polished wood complement traditional wooden writing desks or executive tables. The combination of structural swivel mechanisms, carved wooden motifs, and studded leather upholstery creates a practical seating option for daily administrative use.

FAQs

A ships chair or captains chair of this era is a specialized swivel seating design, historically constructed for use aboard marine vessels or in maritime offices due to its integrated revolving mechanism and heavy, stable frame.

These chairs were predominantly crafted from solid timber such as oak or mahogany, featuring hand-carved foliate detailing, heavy cast iron swivel mechanisms, and upholstered leather seats secured with brass studding.

Authentic period examples feature original cast iron revolving mechanisms beneath the seat, genuine hand-carved decorative elements with minor structural variations, traditional joinery, and age-appropriate wear to the timber finish and leather.

Place this functional piece at a dark wood home office desk or writing table to establish a focal point, pairing its elaborate carving with minimalist contemporary desk accessories to balance the visual weight.

Dust the carved oak surfaces regularly with a soft cloth and apply beeswax polish periodically, whilst treating the leather upholstery with a dedicated leather conditioner to maintain flexibility and prevent drying.
