This Regency wall mirror draws on the French Napoleon III style, fabricated from giltwood and gesso with a reflective mirror glass panel. The decorative gilt frame features a rectangular shape enhanced by carved acanthus leaves along the lower edge and moulded detailing throughout. At the top, a central urn finial rises above ribbon swags that drape towards the corners, complemented by further leaf decoration and a central plaque. The surface shows a bright gold finish with areas of wear and signs of sympathetic historical repairs. Measuring 122 cm high, 79 cm wide, and 4 cm deep, the piece includes a replacement back. It suits display as an overmantel mirror in a living room, hallway, or bedroom.

FAQs

Emerging in late nineteenth-century France, Napoleon III style incorporates revived Neoclassical, Louis XVI, and Baroque design elements, frequently characterised by top crestings, floral swags, and classical urn motifs.

These frames are typically constructed from carved timber or moulded gesso applied over a wood base, which is then finished with oil or water gilding using thin gold leaf.

Authentic gilding displays subtle surface wear revealing the underlying red or grey clay bole, alongside light natural oxidisation and visible overlap lines from the gold leaf application.

A gilded mirror serves as a focal point when placed above a contemporary fireplace, console table, or hallway runner, balancing modern linear architecture with classical architectural detailing.

Dust the gilded frame using a dry, soft-bristled brush or microfibre cloth, taking care to avoid liquid polishes or solvents that dissolve gesso and gold leaf finishes.
