Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Popular throughout the nineteenth century, travelling dressing boxes were designed for upper-class travellers to transport grooming items, glass bottles, and jewellery securely. These portable storage cases were typically crafted from exotic hardwoods with fitted velvet or leather interiors and robust locking mechanisms.

Craftsmen used fine exotic woods such as coromandel, rosewood, and mahogany for the exterior, often decorated with brass stringing, mother-of-pearl escutcheons, or silver-gilt mountings. The interiors were lined with silk velvet or morocco leather and contained silver or silver-plated bottle tops.

Authentic period boxes feature the distinct dark brown grain with orange or amber striations characteristic of calamander wood. They showcase hand-cut dovetail joinery, period locks often stamped by historic makers, and flush-mounted brass corner edging or inlay.

Place the box on a bedroom dressing table, hallway console, or living room sideboard to add historical texture to modern decor. It functions effectively both as a visual focal point and modern functional storage for small personal keepsakes.

Keep the wood away from direct sunlight, central heating sources, and moist environments to prevent warping or veneer lifting. Clean surfaces using a dry microfiber cloth and apply a clear beeswax polish sparingly to maintain the natural timber grain.
