Early Victorian Coromandel and Mother of Pearl Jewellery Box C1850

19th century
For Sale by Aramis Antiques
Description

An early Victorian coromandel jewellery box, with an inlaid and engraved mother of pearl blank shield and key escutcheon. It comes with a key and it operates the lock (stamped secure lock) perfectly. The lid is lined with deeply ruched burgundy velvet. There are three compartments. A steel pin at the back of the frame flicks open the lower drawer, which is lined in burgundy silk. The upper part comprises a lift out tray, with steel side handles, above a deep mahogany lined storage area. The tray itself comprises a burgundy silk lined compartment, a velvet ring strip, and compartments containing five variously sized glass toilette jars and boxes with silver plated lids. Behind the tray and lower storage box, is a double height row of compartments, with one jar with silver plated lid. The coromandel has beautiful colour and lighter colour variation, for which it is renowned. The condition is fabulous, as good as the day it was made.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Victorian coromandel jewellery box is a 19th-century container crafted from Calamander wood, distinguished by its dark tone and contrasting golden-brown grain, often decorated with mother-of-pearl or brass inlay.

Mid-19th-century boxes typically featured fine wood veneers such as coromandel, rosewood, or walnut, accented with mother-of-pearl escutcheons, brass hardware, and interior silk or velvet linings.

Authentic period pieces exhibit hand-cut mother-of-pearl inlays, flush-fitted brass hinges, period keyhole mechanisms, and natural oxidation or wear to the wood finish.

An antique box can be positioned on a bedroom dressing table, a sideboard top, or a hallway console table as a functional decorative accent alongside modern objects.

Keep the wood away from direct heat sources and intense sunlight to prevent veneer movement, and dust gently with a soft microfibre cloth while avoiding abrasive liquid cleaners.
