Overmantel mirrors gained immense popularity during the 19th century, specifically designed to sit atop drawing-room mantelpieces to reflect candlelight and natural light around the interior.

These mirrors typically feature a hand-carved wooden base overlaid with gessoa chalk and plaster mixturewhich was then meticulously sculpted and covered in gold leaf.

Authentic pieces often show signs of age in the gilding, hand-carved detailing rather than modern moulding, traditional joinery on the backboards, and foxing or silver loss within the original mercury or silvered glass plate.

An ornate gold mirror creates a striking focal point when paired with minimalist contemporary furnishings, adding texture, historic contrast, and a sense of vertical height to a room.

Giltwood is extremely delicate; it should be dusted gently with a soft, dry brush and kept away from direct sunlight, moisture, and chemical cleaners to prevent flaking of the gold leaf.
