This large rectangular overmantel mirror dates from the Victorian period around 1870 and follows an Adam Revival Neoclassical style. The frame is constructed from giltwood and gesso in a bright gold colour, resting upon a dark ebonised wooden base. The upper frieze displays relief-carved festoons and swags suspended between corner rosettes, set beneath a detailed beaded moulding. Flanking the central mirror plate are vertical pilasters decorated with carved husk drops, while the reverse is finished with a wooden panelled back. The piece measures 122 cm high, 153.5 cm wide at the top, and 7 cm deep, with a width at the base of 148.5 cm. Positioned in a contemporary home, this mirror belongs above the mantel in a principal reception room or living space, where its large scale reflects light and creates an open atmosphere.
