Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A 17th-century carved oak document box, frequently referred to as a bible box, is a portable wooden container featuring a hinged lid, historically crafted to secure family Bibles, legal deeds, correspondence, and personal valuables.

These boxes were constructed primarily from thick planks of native English oak joined using wooden pegs or hand-forged iron nails. They feature hand-carved decorative front panels and hand-hammered iron hardware such as lock plates and strap hinges.

Authentic pieces exhibit signs of historical woodworking, including uneven saw marks, peg joinery, and natural shrinkage or oxidisation of the oak timber. Relief carving often incorporates period-appropriate motifs such as guilloche patterns, scrollwork, and carved dates or initials.

A period oak box can be styled as a focal accent on a hall console, sideboard, or large desk to introduce organic texture and historical contrast alongside clean modern architecture.

Preserve the natural patina by keeping the oak piece away from direct heat sources and high humidity. Regular dusting with a soft cloth and occasional applications of beeswax nourish the wood and maintain its surface depth.
